Domaine Jones Fitou: Old Vines, Big Character
Katie Jones is a legend of the Fitou region. Not only is she a Brit making wine in the heart of the Languedoc, but she also produces some of the most highly regarded wines in the area.
Katie made the risky decision to buy a vineyard in the Languedoc back in 2008. She had spent many years living and working there, but working in the wine industry is one thing; producing your own wine is quite another. She admits there have been times when she has questioned her decision, although not frequently, and never for very long. Things have gone rather beautifully since then: her wines have received glowing praise, won awards, and she has gone on to buy additional vineyards.
This old vine Fitou shows exactly what some of the oldest and best vines in the area can produce. The wine is made from grapes grown across 15 of Katie’s tiny vineyards, including her first Fitou vineyard, St Roch. These parcels are scattered around the Languedoc towns of Tuchan and Paziols, and many of the vines are over 100 years old.
That vine age is the real key here. It gives the wine freshness, depth and a lovely texture, while keeping it supple and easy to enjoy. In the glass, it is simple in the best possible way: juicy, generous and full of pure hedgerow fruit. Expect blackberry, black cherry, roasted herb notes and a gently leathery finish. It is full of southern French character, but still smooth, savoury and very drinkable.
Domaine Jones Fitou Food Pairing Suggestion:
This would be brilliant with rich, savoury dishes such as andouillette sausage tortellini. The wine’s dark fruit, herbal notes and supple texture work beautifully with meaty pasta, slow-cooked pork, sausages, lamb, cassoulet or anything with a little rustic French comfort about it.
