G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe: Elegant, Refined Barolo
Vajra are legends in Barolo, and Albe is one of our all-time favourite wines. Like all Vajra wines, it is wonderfully refined and delicate, with light, pure fruit and serious tannins on the finish. A perfect Barolo, and a brilliant introduction to the region.
The Vaira family is based in Vergne, a village above Barolo on the western edge of the appellation. Aldo Vaira’s grandparents bought the land in the 1920s, and Aldo made his first vintage in 1972, farming organically at a time when it was very unusual. Today he and his wife Milena work alongside their children Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro.
Albe is a blend of three vineyards: Fossati, Coste di Vergne and La Volta. They sit between 380 and 480 metres, among the highest in Barolo, which gives the wine its freshness and fragrance. The fruit is sorted three times, fermented in vertical wooden vats, and given a long maceration on the skins.
Expect crushed flowers, rose petals, fresh strawberry and raspberry, with notes of tobacco and orange peel. The palate is delicate and elegant, with bright acidity and a long finish of smooth, velvety tannins.
Vajra Barolo Albe Food Pairing Suggestion:
Barolo loves rich, savoury food. Try it with braised beef, truffle risotto, tajarin pasta with butter and sage, roast veal or aged Parmigiano Reggiano.
