Garzón Single Vineyard Tannat: Uruguay’s Signature Red
This is an impressive single vineyard Tannat from Bodega Garzón, Uruguay’s top producer, and a must-try for all fans of Malbec. It is deep and brooding, with ripe black fruit and gentle violet hints on the finish.
Bodega Garzón sits in Maldonado, close to Uruguay’s Atlantic coast, with vineyards split into around 1,150 small plots, each matched to the right variety. The winery is built on natural terraces, uses gravity flow and was the first in the world to earn LEED certification for its buildings. It was ranked fifth in the World’s 50 Best Vineyards in 2025.
The fruit for this wine comes from a cooler site on the estate, with steep slopes and thin, well-drained basalt soils. The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in cement tanks and aged on their lees for 12–18 months in large, untoasted French oak casks, which add structure without masking the fruit.
Expect cherry, strawberry and black plum with smoky tobacco, dark chocolate and violet. The palate is full-bodied, with fresh acidity, firm tannins and spicy black fruit, finishing long and intense.
