Graham’s Six Grapes Port: A Reserve Ruby with Vintage Port Character
If you want a Port that delivers Vintage Port richness without the wait or the price tag, Graham’s Six Grapes is the one. It is an industry benchmark for reserve ruby Port: fruity, smooth and generous, and one of the most reliable bottles you can open after dinner.
Graham’s was founded in 1820 and is now owned by the Symington family, one of the great names of the Douro Valley. The grapes for Six Grapes come mainly from four of Graham’s quintas in the Douro, using classic Port varieties including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca.
The name has a lovely story behind it. In the 19th century, Graham’s winemakers marked each barrel with between one and six grape symbols to rate its quality. Six grapes meant the wine had the potential to become Vintage Port. Six Grapes is selected from wines of that quality, and it spends only one to two years in wood, so it keeps its bold, youthful fruit.
In the glass it is deep, dark red, with ripe blackberries, plum and cherry, plus hints of cassis and liquorice. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with rounded tannins and a long, warming finish. Sweet but beautifully balanced, it is ready to enjoy now.
Six Grapes Port Food Pairing Suggestion:
It is amazing with Colston Bassett Stilton, and just as good with a strong Cheddar or a ripe blue. For dessert, pour it alongside a dark chocolate tart, chocolate brownies or a rich fruit cake.
