Guado al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore: Antinori’s Flagship Super Tuscan

Guado al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore is one of the great names of Bolgheri, made by the Antinori family at their Tenuta Guado al Tasso estate on Tuscany’s coastal Maremma. First released in 1990, it has become a benchmark Super Tuscan, bringing together the polish of Bordeaux varieties with the warmth, sunshine and sea-breeze freshness of the Tuscan coast.

The Guado al Tasso estate sits in the Bolgheri DOC, stretching from the historic village of Bolgheri towards the Tyrrhenian Sea. It covers around 1,000 hectares of gently rolling land, with 300 hectares planted to vines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Vermentino all thrive here, helped by alluvial soils, bright sunlight and cooling coastal influence.

This flagship red is typically based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with Petit Verdot sometimes included depending on the vintage. Each variety is harvested and vinified separately, allowing the final blend to be balanced with real precision. The wine then spends around 18 months in new French oak barriques before further ageing in bottle.

The 2021 vintage is deep ruby in colour, with a beautifully layered nose of blackcurrant, blackberry, pomegranate, violet and wild Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it is rich, polished and beautifully structured, with black cherry, liquorice, spice, mocha and a hint of new leather. The tannins are silky but firm, the freshness is bright, and there is a saline, coastal note that carries the finish. Powerful, refined and built to age, this is a serious bottle with 10–15 years of cellaring potential.

Guado al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore Food Pairing Suggestion:

A beautiful match for ossobuco, especially with saffron risotto or creamy polenta. The wine’s depth, silky tannins and savoury spice work brilliantly with slow-cooked veal, rich sauce and marrow. It would also be excellent with roast beef, Tuscan-style lamb, wild boar ragù or aged hard cheeses.
