Gentil is one of those wines that perfectly captures the spirit of Alsace. Bright, aromatic and wonderfully versatile, it brings together several of the region’s classic grape varieties into a blend that feels both approachable and distinctly Alsatian. Rather than focusing on the intensity of a single variety, Hugel’s Gentil combines the freshness of Riesling, the perfume of Gewürztraminer, the fruit of Pinot Gris and the elegance of Muscat to create a wine with remarkable balance and charm. The nose is immediately inviting, offering aromas of peach, pear and citrus blossom alongside hints of lychee and white flowers. On the palate, the wine is fresh and lively, with layers of orchard fruit, citrus and gentle spice supported by crisp acidity. There’s plenty of aromatic character, but everything remains beautifully integrated and refreshing. Expressive without being overwhelming, this is a wine that showcases Alsace at its most welcoming and food-friendly.

Hugel Gentil, Producer

Founded in 1639, Famille Hugel is one of the most historic and respected wine producers in Alsace. Based in the picturesque town of Riquewihr, the family has been producing wine for over twelve generations and is widely regarded as one of the benchmark names in the region. Hugel’s wines are known for their purity, precision and ability to express the unique character of Alsace. While the estate produces a range of prestigious single-variety wines, Gentil remains one of their most beloved bottlings, offering an accessible introduction to the diversity and complexity of the region.

Hugel Gentil, Terroir & Winemaking

The grapes are sourced from vineyards across the foothills surrounding Riquewihr, where a mosaic of limestone, clay and sandstone soils contributes complexity and balance. Alsace enjoys one of France’s driest climates thanks to the protection of the Vosges Mountains, allowing grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness and aromatic intensity. Each grape variety is vinified separately before blending, enabling the winemaking team to achieve the desired balance of fruit, freshness and texture. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve aromatic purity, with the final blend carefully assembled to highlight the strengths of each variety.
