Ken Forrester, often referred to as the ‘King of Chenin’, produces some of South Africa’s finest wines. He is dedicated to demonstrating the country’s proven talent for crafting high-quality Chenin Blanc. Ken acknowledges that this is his favourite variety, despite its adaptability and subtle, reserved character that can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. However, when given the right care and a touch of gentle sunlight, this grape can produce outstanding wines. Though challenging to work with, the results are incredibly rewarding!
The official meaning of the ‘FMC’ claimed to be Forrester Meinert Chenin, but we tend to refer to it as a ‘F*cking Marvellous Chenin’, because that’s what FMC stands for, and that’s what it is. Before Ken Forrester began producing Chenin in South Africa, the wine had a reputation for being bland and unremarkable. Ken changed this by controlling the yield, which led to healthier grapes with enhanced flavour. Although he isn’t considered a ‘natural’ wine producer, his approach with the FMC is straightforward: the better the grape, the less intervention required.
This wine represents the finest expression of the variety – a true icon and a challenge to the world! It is rich and layered with notes of dried apricot, vanilla, and honey, and it will develop even greater complexity with cellaring.
FMC wine food pairing suggestion: salmon tartare served on homemade crisps. Seafood, white meats and creamy sauces.
Did you know? His wines were served at Nelson Mandela’s 85th birthday celebration.
