The Marco family has been involved in winemaking in the Priorat region since the 15th century. Records show their presence in Porrera during that time, as documented in Catalonia’s first census in 1497.
Today the estate is run by David Marco and Olívia Bayés. Both David, a telecommunications engineer, and Olívia, a lawyer, left their respective careers to wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to establishing a winery in the ancestral village of Porrera. Their goal was to produce DOQ Priorat wines that would authentically reflect the character of their vineyards, some of which date back centuries, while also preserving the family’s heritage.
Marco Abella owns seven distinct estates situated on seven peaks ranging from 500 to 750 meters above sea level in the mountains surrounding the village of Porrera.
The sea breeze, coming from the Mediterranean Sea approximately 20 kilometers away, significantly aids in sustainable agricultural practices by providing excellent aeration to all of these estates.
Mas Mallola is the producer’s Vi de Vila (village wine), representing the typicity and essence of the village of Porrera. It originates from the “La Mallola” plot, the highest vineyard of Marco Abella situated at 750 meters above sea level. The grapes undergo a slow and gradual ripening process, yielding a remarkably balanced, refined, and elegant wine, with distinctive salinity influenced by the Mediterranean Sea breeze.
Food pairing suggestion: The producers recommend a toast with anchovies, and we’re inclined to take their advice.
