Pieropan Soave Classico: A benchmark Italian white
Pieropan Soave Classico DOC is one of those wines that reminds you why Soave deserves far more attention. Fresh, crisp and beautifully balanced, it is a classic dry white from one of the region’s most respected producers. Expect bright orchard fruit, delicate almond notes and a clean, refreshing finish.
The Pieropan family has been making wine in Soave since the late 19th century, and they played a major role in proving how good this region could be. Their Soave Classico comes from family-owned hillside vineyards in the historic Classico zone, where the stony slopes produce fruit with more freshness, definition and character than the flatter plains below.
Made from 85% Garganega and 15% Trebbiano di Soave, this wine is all about purity and precision. The grapes are hand-picked in stages, with Trebbiano usually harvested from mid-September and Garganega in October. Fermentation takes place in glass-lined cement tanks, followed by maturation on fine lees until spring, then a further month in bottle before release.
In the glass, it is a bright straw yellow with a slight green tint. The nose is fragrant and inviting, with white flowers, almond blossom, citrus, ripe apple and a gentle touch of marzipan. The palate is dry, crisp and lively, with fresh pear and apple fruit, clean acidity and a subtle almond-pastry note on the finish. It is elegant without being fussy, and refreshing without feeling thin.
Pieropan Soave Food Pairing Suggestion:
This is a brilliant food wine. Try it with pan-fried sea bass or sea bream, seafood risotto, asparagus and pea dishes, courgette fritters, light soups or egg-based dishes such as frittata. It also works beautifully as an aperitif, especially when you want something crisp, dry and quietly stylish.
