Pombal do Vesuvio: The Second Wine of a Legendary Douro Estate
Quinta do Vesuvio is one of the great Port estates owned by the Symington family. It is not as famous as Graham’s or Warre’s, but it is considered by many to be the jewel in the family’s crown. Pombal do Vesuvio is its rich, full red wine, showing all the heat and power of the Douro.
The Symington family has been making wine in the Douro for five generations. Pombal do Vesuvio is the estate’s second red wine, made from the same remarkable vineyards as the flagship Quinta do Vesuvio.
The blend is led by Touriga Nacional, with Touriga Franca and small amounts of Tinta Amarela and Alicante Bouschet. A touch of oak is used, but it stays in the background, letting the fruit and floral character shine.
Expect blackberry fruit with a lovely rock-rose perfume, wild herbs and violet. The palate is full-bodied and rich, with refined tannins, good freshness and a long finish of tobacco and dried fruit.
Pombal do Vesuvio Food Pairing Suggestion:
Try it with roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, game or a Portuguese cozido. It is also great with soft, washed-rind cheeses such as Reblochon.
