Rafael Palacios Louro Godello: Phil’s Wine of the Summer
Rafael Palacios is one of the great names in Spanish white wine, and his Louro is a stunning Godello: luscious and textured, but still wonderfully refreshing. It was Phil’s wine of the summer, and once you taste it, you will see why.
Rafael is the son of José Palacios Remondo of the famous Palacios family. He set up his own winery in the Valle del Bibei in Valdeorras, Galicia, in north-west Spain, where he works with old Godello vineyards and farms without herbicides or synthetic treatments.
Godello is Galicia’s great white grape, and Rafael is widely credited with showing how good it can be. Louro is a blend of mostly Godello with a little Treixadura, from vines between 10 and 60 years old with low yields. It is aged for a few months in large wooden foudres, which add texture without any obvious oak flavour.
Expect honeyed citrus, white peach and a lovely wet-stone minerality. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, perfumed and precise, with a rich texture balanced by fresh acidity and a long finish.
Louro Godello Food Pairing Suggestion:
Superb with seafood such as octopus, scallops, hake or a seafood rice. It is also excellent with roast chicken, salmon and creamy cheeses.
