Duncan Savage is without a doubt one of South Africa’s top wine producers. His wines speak for themselves. A whole new generation of winemakers and consumers have been introduced to the true potential of local and international varietals.
At Cape Point Vineyards, Duncan served as head winemaker for 14 vintages. Since launching his own Savage Wines brand in 2011, he has been entirely absorbed and focused on building up the Savage brand and establishing his new urban winery in Salt River, Cape Town.
From Piekenierskloof, the best Grenache place, comes Thief in the Night, a gorgeously scented blend (it is also the vineyard of Soldaat by Eben Sadie!) Red cherries, crushed strawberries, and rose petals make up its attractive aroma, which is slightly medicinal thanks to a dash of eucalyptus. Medium-bodied, with a strong grip and firmness, dark berries, and hints of black pepper and graphite on the mouth, along with some garrigue notes, spice, and a little meatiness. The wine has an amazing perfume and purity, as well as crisp acidity and mild tannins.
Food pairing suggestion: Roasted chicken with skhug.
