Greywacke is widely considered as one of the benchmark producers in New Zealand. The estate was created by Kevin Judd who can certainly be given a lot of the credit for popularising the Sauvignon Blanc wines now synonymous with the Marlborough region.

His estate Greywacke Marlborough Sauvignon can be seen as a benchmark wine of the region and since Kevin also made Cloudy Bay in the past; we think he knows a thing or two about what makes a great Sauvignon Blanc.

Greywacke Wines

Greywacke follows a minimal-intervention winemaking philosophy, aiming to create wines that are unique and full of personality. They utilise wild yeast fermentations to add savoury elements to the flavour profile and enhance the structure and mouthfeel of the wines. The range of wines primarily includes sauvignon blanc and pinot noir, with two distinct styles of sauvignon blanc. They also offer limited releases of chardonnay, riesling, pinot gris, and botrytis wines.

Greywacke wines, including Sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot gris, riesling, pinot noir, and Botrytis wines, are known for their concentration of flavour, harmonious balance, and individuality. With a commitment to quality and a focus on showcasing Marlborough’s terroir, Greywacke continues to produce exceptional wines enjoyed by wine enthusiasts worldwide.

Greywacke History

Greywacke is a family-owned wine producer based in Marlborough, New Zealand. The name Greywacke comes from the abundant grey river stones found in Marlborough’s rivers and vineyard soils. The company was established in 2009 and has since gained a global reputation, while still maintaining a simple and hands-on approach to winemaking.

The vineyards that supply Greywacke are located in prime viticultural sites, taking advantage of Marlborough’s sunny South Pacific climate. These vineyards are managed sustainably, with an increasing focus on organic farming. The crop levels are carefully controlled to enhance the concentration of flavour, and the long, cool growing season ensures fruit with intense varietal characteristics and vibrant acidity.

Alex Judd, a Marlborough native, plays a significant role in Greywacke’s winemaking team. With a background in food, beverage, and hospitality, Alex brings a passion for wine and a love for textural white wines, particularly chardonnay. Alongside the winemaking team is Kevin Judd, a pioneer winemaker in Marlborough. Kevin’s extensive experience in the industry and his parallel career in photography have contributed to the global recognition of New Zealand wine.

The name Greywacke reflects the widespread presence of greywacke stone throughout New Zealand’s landscape. While technically referring to a type of sandstone, greywacke has become a general term for the entire rock. It was first used by a German scientist who explored New Zealand in the 19th century and was later adopted by English geologists and New Zealanders alike.
